WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new feature that will provide “disappearing messages” with greater control over privacy. The new tool will automatically remove messages after reading, for extra privacy in private chats.
It is currently in a beta test and is only available for a select group of iPhone beta users on Apple’s TestFlight program. Previously, it was reported that the testing begins on Android beta versions even before reaching iOS.

New “After Reading” Option Appears in Beta Version

The countdown will not start immediately after sending the message, as with the current disappearing message system. Rather, the timer will only be triggered when the recipient reads the message.
This minor change may make it easier for consumers to use disappearing messages if they want to have more sensitive information only for a limited amount of time after they’re seen.
How the New Timer System Works
At present, WhatsApp’s disappearing messages start counting down as soon as a message is delivered. That implies that a message might be lost even if the receiver doesn’t open the conversation. The new system completely upends this methodology. The “After Reading” option will allow the message timer to begin once the recipient reads the message for the first time.
According to users, there are three timing options that will be available. Disappearing messages can be set to disappear in 5 minutes, 1 hour, or 12 hours after they are read. Provides users with increased flexibility based on the information being shared or the conversation type.
Unread Messages Will Still Expire
In addition, the feature will also help prevent unread messages from remaining in the chat for eternity. If a recipient doesn’t open the report within 24 hours, WhatsApp will delete it even without the recipient’s action.
The rule not only ensures the privacy-oriented purpose of the feature but also minimizes the amount of clutter in conversations. The automatic deletion system can be helpful for people who are sharing temporary information, sensitive conversations, passwords, personal information, or time-sensitive updates.
Works Alongside Existing Disappearing Messages
Currently, WhatsApp has disappearing message features, where the chats are automatically deleted after 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days. They will still be available even after the new feature is born.
The new “After Reading” function is thought to operate in parallel with the existing disappearing message system, and not in place of it. Users can still opt for the disappearing message option for chats as a whole, only using the new option when necessary. This provides greater options for customisation and control over the retention period of messages.
Feature Will Be Optional
The one thing to note is that it is apparently still only an optional feature. It won’t be enabled by default for everyone, or for every conversation, on WhatsApp.
Rather, the “After Reading” function has to be turned on individually by the user when he or she wishes to use it. Conversations that disable the setting will proceed normally according to the previous message rules. This way, users can set a privacy level to their liking without interfering with regular chats.
Sender and Recipient May See Different Timings
It’s also being reported that the sender and recipient may not see the message go away at the same time. The sender’s copy of the message may be lost following the timing rule section, and the recipient’s timer may only start after the message is opened and read.
This means that the expiration date could differ slightly between separate users, depending on the time of viewing. More details about this time difference will be made public as testing progresses, but as of this writing, WhatsApp hasn’t been clear on how it will be implemented in practice.
