Belgium celebrate a dramatic extra-time comeback to defeat Senegal 3-2 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32.
Belgium staged one of the greatest last 32 comeback performances of the FIFA World Cup 2026, with a 3-2 victory over Senegal in extra time. Belgium bounced back after a drought to even the score with two goals in the last few minutes of the match but it was Youri Tielemans who pulled his team into the next stage with his controversial penalty kick.
It was a great race, with plenty of ups and downs, some late drama and a heartbreak finish for Senegal, who were poised for a great win but were turned around by Belgium.
Senegal Take Early Control
Having begun well, Senegal were able to neutralise Belgium with a tightly organised defence and with deadly counterattacks. They prevailed, as midfielder Habib Diarra scored the first of their own after half-time to give the African side a much-needed first-half lead.
Belgium found little opportunity to make a difference and Senegal’s defense was solidly organized. Whenever they attacked, Senegal looked menacing, and constantly threatened Belgium.
Ismaila Sarr Doubles the Advantage
But Senegal brought their game together towards the end of the second half, Ismaila Sarr finding a back-heater pass from Babacar Samayeh to make the batting the match-winning 2-0 in the 86th minute. Belgium looked like it was going to get bowled out at that point in the World Cup. In the remaining few minutes of the game Senegal’s players were extolling what appeared to be a win. Belgium were in trouble at the back of the bar in attack and the two goal difference looked to be the deciding margin.
Lukaku Sparks an Incredible Revival
In the face of the difficulties, Belgium refused to surrender. Romelu Lukaku, who came off the bench, put the team ahead straight away. Lukaku was stoned back one from his side, but helped to give Belgium a new lease on life and put a strain on Senegal’s defense.
His goal injected some fresh life into the game as the Belgian players and fans rallied towards the battered side.The goal helped to bring a new life into the match as the match approached its closing moments. Belgium cut the deficit and the comeback seemed to be possible without further warning.
Tielemans Forces Extra Time
Youri Tielemans would find himself in front of the ball to score just a few moments after Lukaku’s goal. Belgium would put Senegal to the sword twice in three minutes time, after chasing them over the greater portion of the match. Tielemans’ goal put the final score at 2-2, and essentially altered the emotional dynamics of a dramatic knockout bout, placing it into overtime.
Controversial Penalty Decides the Match
Extra time was a tense affair as both teams looked for the goal. It looked like a penalty shootout, but a controversial penalty was awarded to Belgium deep into the extra time.
The referee called out the spot and Tielemans was confident, but the Senegalian players protested this. The Belgian midfielder, however, calmly took the penalty and gave Belgium a dramatic 3-2 lead in the closing moments.
Senegal Left Heartbroken
Senegal and their two goals at the end of normal time had taken the lead and appeared to be at ease. Belgium’s late defence, however, turned the game. The controversial penalty only added to Senegal’s disappointment as their World Cup campaign ended in heartbreaking fashion. Despite the defeat, Senegal impressed throughout the match with disciplined defending, energetic pressing, and clinical finishing.

Belgium’s comeback and determination secured their spot in the second round of the World Cup after their biggest comeback win of the tournament. Romelu Lukaku was the match’s most influential player from the bench whilst Youri Tielemans dominated the game from the front with two goals, the winner coming on the penalty area.
Belgium’s win extends their chances of a long World Cup run, albeit with doubts about their defence following their two-goal defeat from a spirited Senegal team.
