iOS 27 introduces major upgrades to Apple Maps, Wallet, Music, Find My, and other everyday apps.
Although all the talk at Apple’s developer conference this year was about its lofty AI aspirations, Apple also showcased several grunt updates through iOS 27 across its ecosystem. Apple Maps, Wallet, Music, Podcasts and Find My all get improvements in functionality as part of the upgrade as well. Apple’s goal is to simplify everyday experiences while also tightening integration across devices.
Developers can access the new features now via the Apple Developer Program, with a public beta expected next month. We expect the official release to be available later this year alongside Apple’s new iPhone range.
Refreshed Maps Experience Arrives in iOS 27
Apple also added more detailed 3D Flyover cities in Apple Maps, including Boston, Toronto, and the area of Florida as well as an overview of motion navigating between points in flyover trees. The firm claims the enhancements will provide a more immersive experience for users to explore key cities and landmarks across the globe.
The second is Local Lists, a discovery feature capturing trending restaurants and attractions within Maps (including popular places). Users will also be able to save recommendations within the app, which may lessen people’s reliance on other services when looking for local inspiration.
Local Lists is seen by industry observers as simply another effort by Apple to solidify its ecosystem and ensure users do not engage with third-party platforms, but stay within its own applications.
Find My Gains Flexible Location Sharing Controls
Important updates are also coming for the Find My app. You will soon be able to tell users how long you want to share your position for, with options including a few minutes, days or up until a certain date and time.
Then it also pitched a new temporary pause feature that will let you stop sharing your location with select people until the end of the day. The feature is for situations when users may want extra privacy without fully disabling location sharing. The new controls offer more options while tackling privacy concerns that have been a growing issue among smartphone users.
Apple Wallet Receives Major Upgrades
Apple Wallet is the next big improvement in iOS 27. Overall, Apple Wallet is one of the most significant changes in iOS 27. Apple is launching a receipt scanning through AI. You shoot a picture of the bill in this case, and it counts that bill among your friends.
The iPhone camera scans a restaurant receipt, and Apple Intelligence can find the items, add tax and tip, and split the bill. Apple Cash can subsequently be used to complete payments directly in Wallet or Messages.
The company is also adding support for physical loyalty and membership cards. This means users will be able to scan barcodes or digital cards and save them in Wallet for quick access.
Hotel Keys and Travel Features Become Smarter
Apple is also expanding travel-related features within Apple Wallet. Guests staying at the hospitality partners will be able to use an iPhone or Apple Watch not just for room key and access, but also to get information about travel.
Wallet will see trip details, activity schedules, hotel services and real-time updates all become accessible via the app. Apple said the feature will help create a more seamless travel experience by eliminating those separate hotel apps. The Apple Watch Smart Stack is also getting expanded support for hotel keys, making it easier to access passes while on the go.
Apple Pay Checkout Experience Gets a Redesign
A new kind of checkout interface for Apple Pay is coming right in the middle of online stores and applications. Refreshed UI supports better swiping of payment cards, has a section for viewing rewards balances, debit account details and installment payment preferences.
In addition, in the coming year, people will also be able to fund their debit cards directly from within Wallet or at checkout. According to Apple, the feature would simplify digital payments and improve financial management.
Merchants will also benefit from a newly introduced Tap to Share capability. A new feature that lets customers pass data like shipping addresses, loyalty memberships, and contact info by tapping their device without directly touching anybody or anything, touchless.
Apple Music Adds New Language and Audio Features
When you are learning a new language, there is nothing better than practicing it with the application itself. We added many new language pairs for Lyrics Translation, primarily English translations of songs in French, German, Italian, Korean, Japanese and Spanish.
The Lyrics Pronunciation feature is also being improved, enabling users to sing along to songs published in languages they’re not familiar with. It will now have phonetic transliteration support as well for even more language pairs.
At the same time, improvements are being made to AutoMix with the aim of seamless transitions between songs. This feature is also rolling out beyond just iPhone to devices like the Apple TV and HomePod. Those with supported audio systems will also be treated to studio-quality Hi-Res Lossless Audio on Apple TV 4K.
Podcasts and Shared Albums See Meaningful Improvements
New search capabilities are coming to podcasts so users can search within a specific show instead of all available podcasts. Available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Vision Pro and the web. They’re continuing to expand video podcast support on Mac and Apple TV, as video-first content creators continue to boom.
Upgrading Shared Albums in iCloud Photos: Sharing high-res photos, emoji reacting, album-based activity tracking, plus short-term albums for things/events and projects you just want to memorialise temporarily. Crucially, as well as Apple device owners, the contribution of photos through a web browser by everybody else will also make cross-platform collaboration easier.
Fitness+ Introduces Menopause-Focused Programs
Wellness offerings within Apple Fitness+ are also getting expanded. Strong Through Menopause is a three-week program to gain strength, mobility, and balance (or how well you balance), as well as stress management practices for both perimenopause and menopause.
The service is also releasing a new Time To Walk episode with actress Busy Philipps to talk about her own journey as she goes through perimenopause. The new features are in line with its wider plan to make health and wellness more experiential through subscription.
Public Beta Arrives Next Month
Apple’s developer program is open for developers to start testing all these new features right now. Apple is set to release a public beta of iOS 27 next month, giving consumers an early taste of the forthcoming software ahead of its launch later this year.
While Apple Intelligence remains at the forefront of news, iOS 27 proves that Apple is still committed to perfecting the daily use cases for millions of customers across its ecosystem.
