JSM-R leader Riaz Chandio criticises smart lockdown

Riaz Chandio addresses media at a press conference, criticising the government’s smart lockdown policy and its impact on Sindh.

Riaz Chandio, chairman of Jeay Sindh Mahaz-Riaz (JSM-R), has strongly criticised the government’s “smart lockdown” policy, calling it harmful to the public.

Speaking at a press conference at the Sukkur Press Club, Chandio said the restrictions are not balanced and are instead placing the heaviest burden on ordinary citizens. He was joined by party leaders, including Zulfiqar Buledi and Khushal Kalani.

According to him, the policy is damaging the livelihoods of labourers and daily wage earners, who depend on regular work to survive. He added that key sectors like education and the judicial system are also suffering due to ongoing restrictions.

Impact on Economy and Agriculture

Chandio warned that Sindh’s economy, which is already under pressure, could face serious damage if such policies continue. He stressed that workers in agriculture are among the worst affected.

He pointed out that both landowners and farmers are struggling, with rising costs and limited access to markets. In his view, these challenges are pushing the agricultural sector toward a crisis.

He also accused the government of ignoring public needs while protecting its own interests. According to Chandio, reducing state spending and cutting unnecessary expenses could provide relief, but instead, the burden is being passed on to the general population.

Concerns Over Education and Justice

Another major concern raised by Chandio was the closure of educational institutions. He said that shutting down schools and colleges is affecting students’ right to education.

He also criticised disruptions in court operations, saying they limit access to affordable justice. In his view, these measures are depriving citizens of basic rights and creating long-term social problems.

Objections to Canal Projects and Resource Use

Chandio also spoke out against federal canal projects, including the Jalalpur Canal and initiatives linked to the “Green Pakistan” program. He described these projects as unfair to Sindh, claiming they divert water and resources away from the province. He further accused the provincial government of failing to take a strong stand on these issues.

In addition, he alleged that land and forest areas in Sindh are being taken over in the name of development. According to him, such actions are harming local communities and raising serious concerns about resource control.

Allegations on Resource Distribution

Chandio claimed that despite discoveries of gas and minerals in areas like Khairpur, the benefits are not reaching local people. Instead, he alleged that these resources are being redirected to other regions.

He also criticised ongoing operations in riverine areas, saying they appear ineffective and may be diverting attention from other issues, such as land control.

Call for Unity and Political Action

In response to the current situation, Chandio announced plans to hold a “Sindh National Conference” at the Sukkur Press Club. The aim of the conference, he said, is to bring together nationalist leaders and groups to form a united front for the protection of Sindh’s rights.

He also condemned recent arrests of nationalist figures at the Karachi Press Club, including Dr. Niaz Kalani, and demanded their immediate release.

Sindh-Balochistan Relations

Addressing regional tensions, Chandio rejected any attempts to create conflict between Sindh and Balochistan. He emphasised that while his party respects the Baloch struggle, it will not compromise on Sindh’s unity.

He also highlighted the long-standing relationship between the people of Sindh and Balochistan, stating that both communities have shared history and cultural ties. According to him, efforts to create division between the two regions should be resisted.

Final Remarks of JSM-R Criticise “Smart Lockdown” Policy

Chandio concluded by reaffirming his party’s commitment to a peaceful and democratic struggle. He said JSM-R will continue to raise its voice for the protection of Sindh’s water, land, and natural resources. He stressed that unity, awareness, and consistent political effort are necessary to address the challenges facing the province today.
