Anthropic Cowork Brings Claude File Automation to Desktop Users

Anthropic has introduced Anthropic Cowork, a new tool that allows users to run Claude on their own files without needing coding skills. The feature is built directly into the Claude Desktop app and gives users the ability to select a folder where Claude can read, edit, and organize documents using simple chat instructions.

With Anthropic Cowork, users no longer need command lines, scripts, or special technical setups. They can simply tell Claude what to do, making the tool ideal for people who want AI help with daily work tasks. The tool is currently available in research preview for Max subscribers, while users on other plans can sign up for early access.

What Anthropic Cowork Does

Anthropic Cowork is powered by the same system behind Claude Code, which means it can perform multiple actions across files without constant user input. Users can ask Claude to sort documents, analyze text, organize folders, or build reports from stored data.

The folder system gives users full control over what Claude can access. This keeps the rest of the computer protected while allowing Cowork to work inside a chosen space. Anthropic says this makes Cowork a safe way to use AI for productivity without exposing private data.

How Claude Desktop and Cowork Work Together

Claude Desktop now acts as a control center for Anthropic Cowork. Users open the app, choose a folder, and then give instructions through chat. Claude then scans files, edits content, or creates new documents based on those instructions. This approach allows people to use Claude as a digital assistant that can actually handle files instead of just answering questions.

Popular Use Cases for Anthropic Cowork

Anthropic says users can turn receipt images into expense reports, organize media libraries, review social posts, or analyze conversations stored in documents. Many Claude Code users were already doing these tasks, but Cowork makes them easier and safer for non-technical users.

Safety and Control Remain Important

Because Anthropic Cowork can change and delete files, Anthropic advises users to give clear and direct instructions. Vague commands could lead to mistakes such as lost files or wrong edits. These risks exist with all automated tools, but Cowork includes safeguards by limiting access to only the selected folder.

Anthropic Expands the Claude Ecosystem

Claude Code launched in late 2024 and quickly became one of Anthropic’s most widely used tools. It later gained a web interface and a Slack integration. Anthropic Cowork is the next step, bringing agent-based AI to everyday desktop users. With Anthropic Cowork, Claude becomes more than a chatbot. It becomes a full digital assistant for real work.
